Brain development #2 Adam Kepacs

Adam Kepacs (Cold Spring Harbor Labs) continued his argument after the coffee break with a very specific example of the VIP inhibitory interneuron. The cells in his diagram are identified by RNA expression pattern. Different types contact and create inhibition at different locations, e.g. distal dendritic, somatic, or axonal. VIP is shown to inhibit 75% of SOM cells, and not so much other cells. Thus VIP activity disinhibits pyramidal cells. And VIP gets input from local, interareal, and modulatory pathways. VIP has serotonin 5HT3 modulatory input which are ionotrropic fast receptors. And it has nACh receptors that are also fast compared with metabotropic second messenger inputs. When you record VIP in auditory cortex, and vary tone and see that the cells are tuned to some frequency. Giacomo inaugurated the 2018 CapoCaccia meeting by saying a few words about the organisation of the workshop and introducing us to the key contributors who helped organise the meeting this year - Moritz Milde and Gaby Michel, and others like Elisa Donati and Nicoletta Risi. The first lecture ' A road map to the beauty of the brain' was delivered by Rodney Douglas. Rodney began his lecture by reminding us of a 3000-year old problem – how the ‘silent’ single cell (in the form of an ‘egg’) turns into a functional chicken, i.e., how the blank slate (tabula rasa) of developing cortical circuits accommodates emergence of functional specialisation contributing to animal behaviour! Rodney began by describing how in developing vertebrates, embryonic precursors form neural tube (progenitor of CNS – brain and the spinal cord). Movement and action (zebrafish and suffering, movement control by midbrain and cortex)

Rained very hard last night, continuing today. New people: Andrew Rowley from Manchester ("Helping to use SpiNNaker effectively). Julia Buhmann, connectomics, DNNs, ("Do not eat meat"). Florian Engert, neuroscience, larval zebrafish ("For sale: fish feelings lovingly explained"). For Friday, 2h wrapup, followed by demo sessions. Florian Engert started off talking about fish feelings, technically valence, claiming that audience would think this more interesting than mechanisms or networks. He took larval zebrafish as example, which they study. There are 100k neurons in this vertebrate brain. They have mammalian behaviors. They are translucent so they can measure all neurons. Then somehow a discussion of suffering started. By definition alpha fibers are stimulated. But these still need a brain to turn pain to what is defined as suffering.
